Capturing Reality:
Preparing for Successful Process ImprovementAn integral and often overlooked step in improvement work is the
preparation work: defining the project and gathering the facts that are
essential to gaining a good understanding of the existing process. Too often
this initial phase of a project is given cursory attention or ignored
altogether.
This is the first in a series of papers dealing with the
up‐front work in process improvement projects.

Musing
Once a process has
been identified for study, setting up a project as outlined in the paper above
should be quick, completed within a few hours. We don't address costs,
potential savings, time frame...yet, because it is premature. We'll
prepare a detailed process map over the course of a few hours (or a few days
with a large project), then let the process map help us replace what would have
been guesswork about time, costs and savings with accurate estimates. What
do you think?
